Tips for Clients

What to Wear for Beautiful Portraits

  1. Keep it simple. Solid colors are best in portraits. Avoid large, bold patterns and bright colors that draw attention away from your face.
  2. Cover up arms. Long sleeves draw attention away from your arms and helps bring the focus to your face.
  3. Don’t forget the bottom half. Our photographer may suggest a full-length pose. Make sure you coordinate portrait clothing from head to toe.
  4. Accentuate the positive in portraits. Darker clothing slims. Light tones tend to emphasize body size.
  5. Frame your face. Scoops or v-necks flatter shorter necks and full faces. Turtlenecks or high-necked garments flatter longer necks and slender faces.
  6. Keep clothing consistent. Dress everyone in the same style. Don’t mix casual and formal clothing in portraits.

Coordinate Colors

  1. Wear light on white. Light pastel or white clothing looks best against a light-colored or white portrait background.
  2. Wear dark on dark. Dark clothing looks best against darker backgrounds and creates a more formal mood in portraits.
  3. Don’t mix light and dark colors in portraits. Save stronger colors and patterns for accent items like scarves and neckties.

Pick Portrait Studio Props and Backdrops

  1. Ask for advice. If you’re not sure what you want in your portrait, our photographers can help you choose a portrait background that suits your needs.
  2. Add your personality. For a personal touch, bring a favorite toy or your own props to a portrait session.

Accessorize and Personalize your Portraits

We want your portraits to reflect your personality and individual style. By adding a splash of color with an accessory, handmade item or a special family heirloom, your portrait memories will have personal touch.

We suggest that you bring in your own special items to create your own look.

Suggested items to make your session more personal:

  1. Stuffed animal
  2. Baby blanket
  3. Hand knit sweaters, scarves, leggings, baby booties
  4. Artwork created by your little one
  5. Hair accessories
  6. Grandma’s old costume jewelry
  7. Sports items or jerseys
  8. Religious items or outfits
  9. Special toy or toy collections
  10. Musical instruments

Tips and Tricks for Great Maternity Portraits

Looking belly beautiful is easy. Here are a few tips to consider before coming in for your sitting.

  1. Schedule your session when you are in your seventh or eighth month of pregnancy. Your belly will have a lovely, full shape.
  2. Bring in your ultrasound. We can take a very special portrait of mama and baby.
  3. Your maternity session could include the father and older children to reflect your beautiful growing family.
  4. If you want to show your bare tummy, wear loose-fitting clothing to avoid elastic/clothing marks.
  5. Put on lotion at least an hour before your session to avoid the shiny belly-look and staining your clothes.
  6. Moisturize your knees and elbows.
  7. Get a manicure or a light polish for a more finished look in a close up of your hands around your belly.
  8. Remove tight-fitting clothing and accessories (watches and bracelets) at least two hours before your session.
  9. You may want to include a few baby things like a cute pair of shoes or a cherished family heirloom in your portrait.

Clothing Suggestions

Here are a few dress suggestions to make this moment in your life memorable:

  1. Solid colored shirts focus the attention on your tummy’s shape and glowing expression.
  2. Large patterns distract. Avoid big floral prints, swirls, plaids and stripes.
  3. Form-fitting clothes with a little stretch will compliment your figure rather than loose clothing.
  4. Long sleeves tend to be the most flattering, but sleeveless and spaghetti straps work well. Avoid t-shirt length sleeves.
  5. If you want to show your bare belly, consider wearing a top and skirt or pants that won’t leave binding marks across your tummy.
  6. Choose silk or cotton fabrics as they drape beautifully around a pregnant body.
  7. Empire-waist blouses and dresses, button-up shirts, tank tops, long drawstring skirts and tie dresses can really enhance your blossoming shape.
  8. Dark jeans and black tapering yoga pants make your legs look long and slim.
  9. Pick your footwear depending on your clothing. If your toes are exposed in a sandal-style, you might want to get a pedicure.
  10. Consider your undergarments with the style of clothing you choose to wear. You might not want lines showing through your clothing.
  11. Accessories can enhance and personalize your style. A cheerful scarf, or sweater, or even chunky jewelry can add fun splashes of color.

Tips and Tricks for Beautiful Newborn Portraits

Newborn infants are tiny beings for a very short time. Capture this very brief but heartwarming moment in your baby’s life.

  1. Schedule your newborn portraits when your baby is between one and three weeks.
  2. Attempt to schedule your portrait sitting around your infant’s nap and feeding routine. If possible, feed your infant prior to leaving from home. This will allow their little tummies to settle and reduce spitting up and fussiness.
  3. It is important to bring essential items to comfort your infant including a favorite blanket, pacifier, diapers, wipes and anything necessary for feedings.
  4. No infant portrait is complete without you, the parents. So come prepared.
  5. Even if you aren’t comfortable posing in your post-baby glory, give yourself a manicure in case you want close-ups of your hands cradling your baby’s head, feet and hands.
  6. Schedule your baby’s milestone portraits while you are at the studio. Most common dates are three-month, six-month, nine-month and first birthday portraits.

Clothing

Who doesn’t adore a picture of a cute, wriggly baby? Capturing your infant with the right clothing and a few favorite items will make a huge difference to your album.

  1. Infants look adorable with little or no clothing. A baby onesie, or a diaper, or a swaddle blanket is usually sufficient.
  2. Bring along a beanie or stocking cap as it can soften your baby’s face.
  3. Newborn clothes tend to bunch up and look messy. Your tiny baby can get lost in layers of clothing.
  4. Choose light-colored clothes. White or pastels bring out your baby’s sweet complexion.
  5. Avoid mittens or socks. They leave elastic marks on tiny wrists and ankles.
  6. Include a spare outfit in your diaper bag in case of spit ups or leaks.
  7. If you have any cherished items like a favorite toy or framed picture of a deceased grandparent, and would like to include it in your portraits, carry it along.
